In 1936, according to the decision made by Karen Central Organization or Taw Kalu, Karen MPs asked Dr. Ba Maw Coalition Government for three demands as follow:
1. Karen National Flag 2. Karen National Anthem 3. Karen New Year Day (Karen National Day)
Then KCO requested the Karen population from different background to design Karen National Flag. Over hundreds of Karen National Flag designs were sent to KCO, but only twelve designs were selected for further competition. Later, three designs were chosen out of twelve and the best one and the most suitable design with Karen Drum, a rising sun with nine rays; red, blue and white flag presented by Mahn Ba Khin was selected for the final. The Flag has been using as Karen National Flag until today for the entire Karen people inland or outside of Burma. When Karen Rifle Regiment was established in 1936, Karen commanders added a buffalo horn on the original Karen flag and presented to Lt. Col. Zaya, the Vice Chief of Staff of Burma Army to use as the flag of Karen Rifle Regiment. Their request was approved and the flag was allowed to use as Karen Rifle eventually.
