The
Karen National League, as a non-armed Karen organization, seeks to uplift
the lot of the Karen people and bring about the rule of law and true democracy
to Burma. It engages in any and all lawful activities incidental to the
foregoing purposes.

KNL's Principle of Cooperation Karen National League and other Karen and Non-Karen Organization Adopted by the First General Conference of KNL, July 15-17, 1999, Perth, Australia. In the struggle for ethnic equality and democracy, the KNL believes that its close cooperation with Karen and Non-Karen democratic organization is extremely crucial. Constant and strategic collaboration with mutual respect serves, as critical measures of trust building which will essentially lead to a genuine national harmony. Giving full recognition of complexity and sensitivity of political situation in Burma, the KNL values prudence in relations with any resistance organizations working toward a democratic and federal union of Burma. The KNL's policy on its relations with Karen and Non-Karen democratic organizations will be based on the following salient principles: - Recognition of the KNL as a Karen democratic force working toward a free and democratic federal union of Burma, as the KNL recognizes every democratic forces, both of Karen and non-Karen, as its equal working partner; - Working toward the elimination of military dictatorship with the aim to establish a democratic governance; - Promotion of the principle of ethnic equality and right to self-determination of ethnic nationalities; - Promotion of respect and understanding between different cultures and social traditions among diverse ethnic nationalities of Burma, including the Burmans.
