OFFICE OF THE SUPREME HEADQUARTERS KAREN NATIONAL UNION KAWTHOOLEI Karen National Union (KNU)

Statement concerning the press conference held on the 20th of April 1998, by Padoh Aung San, who had surrendered to State Peace and Development council (SPDC) Padoh Aung San, a former KNU central committe member was also the person responsible for the Forestry Department. As one responsible for the Forestry Department, he took the opportunity of being trusted by the central committee and manipulated the income from the logging business. He misappropriated the income for buying land, buildings and cars for his own personal benefit. From our information we have come to know that he made secret contacts with the DKBA and participated in the illegal logging scandal in cooperation with some greedy business men. He made secret purchase of fire-arms and formed his own pocket-army to achieve power by dubious means. The KNU had been investigating the activities of Padoh Aung San for some time. Aware of this, he enticed people who had close connections with him into going back to Burma with him. This was his way of escape from being exposed. In his press conference on 20/4/98 , Padoh Aung San stated that some KNU leaders did not want peace, that some KNU personnel are staying in camps as refugees, that KNU is obstructing the refugees who wanted to return to Burma., that Refugee Camps were simply "Death Camps" which were all words without substance. These were just words of deception. whether these statements are words of truth or the utterance of a traitor had already been analyzed by all those at the press conference, or those watching it on Television (T.V - Myannmar) Karen Refugees sought refuge in Thailand because of civil war in Burma. The Thai Government is helping and providing security on Humanitarian grounds. The day that conflict in Burma is resolved and stability restored is the day that Refugees will return to Burma. Peace, that the Kaen people want is not the kind of peace that the criminal Aung Sun sought. What the KNU want is peace based on compassion, harmony and understanding between ethnic nationalities. The KNU is always ready to solve the political problems by political means. The KNU always endeavour to seek ways for people to live in peace. Padoh Aung San's activities are not for the achievement of peace, but as a way of escape from fear of being exposed as a traitor. Padoh Aung San's surrender to the SPDC is solely for self-preservation. It is very plain that his accusations of the KNU were just outright lies.
