Police arrested a Burmese man who allegedly snatched Bt200 in cash from an old woman and then held a five-year-old boy hostage in Bangkok’s Phra Nakhon district early yesterday morning.

Police said the suspect, identified as Gaeb, 37, held Chayuth Dontri hostage for 20 minutes early yesterday before they managed to calm him down and arrest him.

The boy, who was threatened with a sharp broken bottle, was safely rescued.

At around 6am, the man stole Bt200 from an old woman outside the Thai Hotel on Prachadhipatai Road.

The victim, La-or Saiwiphu, 60, filed a complaint with police and later identified Gaeb as the thief.

Sgt-Major Jareuk Phaopuri, of Chanasongkram police station, said the suspect was apprehended near Intarawiharn Temple on Wisutkasat Road because he matched the description given by La-or. He managed to escape and grab the boy.

Prakob Dontri, 30, the boy’s mother and a palm-sap vendor, said the boy was taken while they were travelling together to pick up sap at a temple.

The boy was seized as he rode his bike slightly ahead of his mother.

“When I saw my son being held as hostage I almost fainted with fear for his life. I thank the police for rescuing him,” she said.

The suspect will be charged with armed robbery and illegal detention, police said.

He seemed to be mentally disturbed and gave confusing testimony in which he admitted that he stole the money and grabbed the child because he was stressed.
